SBC @ Prayer ~ Week of Prayer for International Missions

Who's Missing? Whose Mission?
Week of Prayer for International Missions

2009 Week of Prayer, Nov. 29-Dec. 6.

False religions, political oppression, multiple languages, harsh living conditions and religious persecution are some of the barriers to sharing Christ with unreached people groups. Still, that doesn't override the Great Commission that Scripture gives to all who follow Him.

It is this challenge that compels Southern Baptists to go into difficult places and preach the Gospel.

Pray during Week of Prayer 2009 for these pockets of lostness:

DAY 1: Peoples of Northern India

DAY 2: Peoples of Ethiopia

DAY 3: Lezghi people of the Caucasuses

DAY 4: Berber people of North Africa

DAY 5: Vietnamese of Cambodia

DAY 6: Peoples of Iran

DAY 7: Lost cities of China

DAY 8: Peoples of the Canary Islands

SBC @ Prayer ~ Are We Praying Against Radical Islam or for Muslims to Find Christ?

Posted on Sep 28, 2009 | by Staff WASHINGTON (BP)--Thousands of Muslims gathered Sept. 25 on the west lawn of the U.S. Capitol for prayer in what may have been the first such event of its kind at the site.

Although organizers announced on the "Islam on Capitol Hill" website their expectation of a gathering of 50,000, the attendance appeared to be no more than 7,000 to 8,000. The U.S. Capitol Police do not make crowd estimates, a spokeswoman told Baptist Press.

The event included recitations from the Qur'an, a sermon and the Friday prayer observed by Muslims. Those attending sat segregated by gender on the ground facing east toward the Capitol and Mecca, the scared site of Islam in Saudi Arabia.

During his sermon, Abdul Malik encouraged Muslims while trying to reassure Americans of their support for this country.

"I want the American people to know: We love you.... America, this is our country. We are with you," said Malik, a New York imam who plans to move soon to Washington to serve as chief executive officer of Islam on Capitol Hill.===>Click headline to access the entire article . . .

IBSA @ Prayer ~ Update on Allen Mashburn, former IBSA Staff Member

On Thu, Sep 24, 2009 at 10:25 PM, Michael Wilder wrote:

Allen is scheduled to have his 2nd surgery. A plastic surgeon will do a skin graft to wrap his leg and cover the wounded area. We are continually amazed at God's goodness in answer to prayer. So we are praying in faith believing God can lead the surgeon successfully tomorrow.

It has been a very long ordeal but after tomorrow Allen will remain another 7 days at the Northwestern Medical Center and then moved back to Provena Hopital in Urbana for intensive therapy. It will be great for him and Jeannie to be back together again. One of our church members drove Jeannie up to see Allen on Wednesday. It was very encouraging for both of them to be together for a day. Jeannie complete another chemo treatment this week and has only 3 remaining. PTL! As Allen regularly says, "God is good all the time." He truly is a man of Faith. Thank you for sharing their struggles through prayer. They feel your prayers. And I am grateful that you are God's army carrying the Mashberns' burdens. May God show you special kindness and blessings on your families and ministries. Pastor Mike Wilder

SBC @ Prayer ~ Women's prayer network announced, designed to equip, encourage

Women's prayer network announced
By Kelly Shrout

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (BP)--PrayerGates.com, an online social networking community to minister to women around the globe, has been launched by the B&H Publishing Group.

The name "PrayerGates" is drawn from the Acts 16:13 reference to the city gates where women of Macedonia gathered to pray.

"In biblical times the city gates were the gathering place of power," said Andrea Dennis of the B&H division of LifeWay Christian Resources of the Southern Baptist Convention. "Today, we are calling women to gather virtually to unleash the power of prayer in their lives, church, community and world."

PrayerGates.com for 2009 will use Beth Moore's bestselling "Praying God's Word" to equip and encourage women. Weekly excerpts from the book will be posted on the site as discussion starters.

Personalized profiles, user-created prayer groups and multimedia resources also will be features of the online community. The site, which went online during the week of Sept. 20, will allow users to create prayer groups specifically for Beth Moore Bible studies and events and will provide a prayer community for individuals impacted by Beth Moore's ministry.

Users do not necessarily have to create groups based on Beth Moore resources or events, though Praying God's Word is the initial resource emphasis. The site also will feature other authors. PrayerGates.com each year will focus on a new resource related to prayer. The site also will provide custom commissioned worship music and videos focusing on prayer.

"PrayerGates is ministry-oriented," Dennis said. "We know that there are many women out there who are in need of prayer. There are women who also want to share how they have been impacted by Beth Moore's ministry. PrayerGates is a safe environment where women can post their prayer needs, anonymously if they choose, and know that there are godly women who care enough to pray."

The site has an intentional Kingdom focus, added Jennifer Lyell, B&H women's acquisition editor.

Church groups and individuals can create a specialized prayer circle for Bible studies, ministry events and mission trips.

"This community will have incredible implications for mission workers," said Lyell, noting that privacy settings will allow users to create password-protected prayer circles. "Individuals on long-term or short-term mission projects can post prayer requests, praise reports and updates on PrayerGates."

A live, up-to-date news feed of new prayer requests and praise reports also will appear on the front page of PrayerGates.com.

"Ultimately, we hope this global prayer initiative will be a place of refuge for many women and help them harness the power of prayer," Dennis said. "We also hope the evangelical message of PrayerGates.com will impact users who don't have a personal relationship with Christ."

SBC @ Prayer ~ Morris Chapman calls for classes to pray for "one more soul"

Chapman urges prayer for 'one more soul'

Posted on Sep 21, 2009 | by Art Toalston NASHVILLE, Tenn. (BP)--Announcing "a prayer initiative to support the Great Commission Resurgence," Morris H. Chapman called Baptists to each pray for one person to be saved.

Chapman, president of the Southern Baptist Convention's Executive Committee, issued the call to prayer during the opening session of the EC's Sept. 20-21 meeting in Nashville, Tenn.

Chapman also announced to EC members his plans to retire effective Sept. 30, 2010. (See BP Breaking News story above.)

In his call to prayer for his final year as EC president, Chapman stated:

"I ask all pastors and heads of Southern Baptist organizational life to call your people together. In a spirit of worship, ask all who will to pray for one person every day until that person is saved or one of you dies. Ask them to make their pledge by coming to the altar. While they are standing and/or kneeling, ask them if they will trust God to help them witness to the saving power of Jesus Christ and Him crucified until that person is saved, rejects the Gospel outright, or one of you dies. If and when the person is saved, encourage them to obey the Lord Jesus Christ by following Him in believer's baptism.

"If you will do this several times during the coming months, those who actively witness as members of your church or organization will multiple significantly. As a result, you may see hundreds, even thousands come to Christ. It's worth a try. This would be a Great Commission resurgence.

"My prayer is that we shall give our Lord Jesus Christ all the glory, Chapman said, closing by quoting Ephesians 3:20-21: "Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us, unto him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus throughout all ages, world without end. Amen."===>Click headline to access complete article . . .

SBC Prayer Leaders @ Brooklyn Tabernacle

The Right Way to Pray?

Published: September 16, 2009

The Brooklyn Tabernacle, a 3,500-seat evangelical prayer palace in downtown Brooklyn, was built in 1918 as one of the largest and grandest vaudeville houses in North America. It is still a hot ticket. Its youngish, racially diverse congregation packs the pews each week to praise God and bask in the sounds of a Grammy-winning 250-voice gospel choir. But the tabernacle is more than just a popular church. It is also a destination for evangelicals from all around the United States and beyond, laymen and ministers alike, who come as acolytes to study prayer.

Readers' Comments

More people are turning toward do-it-yourself spirituality. How do you pray? Share your experiences.

“Prayer is like other activities,” the Rev. Daniel Henderson told me when we met at the tabernacle the week before Easter. He was visiting Brooklyn with a group of seminary students from Virginia. “You learn from people who are already good at it,” he went on. “The people who pray at the Brooklyn Tabernacle are committed. Praying with them is an education.”

Henderson is a peppy, unassuming man in his early 50s, aJerry Falwell-trained Baptist minister. After serving for many years as the spiritual leader of a megachurch in suburban Minneapolis, he left the pulpit and founded Strategic Renewal, a nonprofit organization that holds “prayer summits” and how-to-worship seminars around the country. (Henderson was also a contributor to the magazine Pray!, which recently went out of business.) “The fact is, most pastors never learn how to really pray,” he explained. “They get to the seminary, and people just assume they know how to pray. But that’s not true. Prayer is a lot more than reciting words. It requires mastering both theory and technique.”

In the afternoon, in a classroom of the tabernacle’s annex, Henderson delivered a workshop on technique to an audience of pastors and seminary students. “Some people think it is better and more meaningful to pray alone, but that’s false,” he told his students. “You improve by praying with others who can mentor you, people who are more expert than you.” According to Henderson, there are rules of effective praying: “Let God begin the conversation. Keep your prayers brief and clear. Repeat simple Scripture-based phrases. Pray standing up to fight torpor. And pray directly facing others, eye to eye, in a loud, clear voice.”

That evening Henderson took his students to the tabernacle for a practical demonstration. “Tuesday nights here are the biggest regular weekday praise services in America,” he told me. “Nationally famous. It’s always exciting to see something like this, especially in New York.” The chapel was nearly full when we arrived.===>Click headline for complete article . .

IBSA @ Prayer: A Public Blessing

A FINAL BLESSING for a GRADUATION CEREMONY

Adapted for the Graduation Ceremony, May 29, 2009 the graduating class of Clinical Pastoral Education spring class Feb 2nd, 2009 until May 29th, 2009 by Chaplain Lee Gatzke (Temple Baptist Church, South Chicago Heights, IL)

What is a final blessing? ... the final blessing is commonly referred to as a Benediction.

  • A benediction is an authoritative announcement of divine blessing found thru out the Bible.
  • It represents a joyful, unifying call, to faith, based on the ensured divine principle – GOD -
  • A benediction is a short concise statement given thru out the Bible, in the form of a petition
  • It gives an assurance, a promise, based on a principle. It voices an image of comfort, from words of assurance.
  • The word benediction means to produce good thoughts. What makes good thoughts good - is because they are base on biblical truths, inspired by GOD.
  • Good is the unavoidable result of certainty and righteousness of truth,
  • The truth being GOD who is all internally GOOD.

THE BENEDICTION - Is found in, Numbers Chapter 6, verses 24 thru 26 (King James Version)

SO UNTIL WE CAN MEET AGAIN

MAY THE LORD BLESS YOU AND KEEP YOU

This means: May the kindnesses of God precede you, and walk beside you to comfort you?

THE LORD, MAKE HIS FACE TO SHINE UPON YOU AND BE GRACIOUS TO YOU.

This means: May the wisdom of God be with you and walk above you to watch over you.

THE LORD LIFT UP HIS COUNTENANCE UPON YOU AND GIVE YOU PEACE

This means: May the light of GOD follows you, and walk before you to show the way, forever and ever.

- AMEN -

In the Secret Place: A Pilgrimage through the Psalms

In the Secret Place

For years, International Mission Board president Jerry Rankin has begun each day by reading and meditating on a psalm. “The psalms reveal the nature and character of God,” he explains. “The graphic, picturesque language evokes images that stir our emotions and strengthen our confidence. To know that God is our rock, our shield, our fortress, and our strong tower all convey an understanding we need each day.”
In the Secret Place gathers devotions and prayers written by Rankin for each of the one-hundred-fifty chapters in the book of Psalms. Personal yet universal, they reflect an openhearted journey of faith and deepening love for God to which the reader will aspire.===>Click headline for more info . . .

Update on Former IBSA Staffer Allen Mashburn

.

Phil, I have waited until I got the word on Allen's surgery before I updated this prayer request. He was scheduled for surgery on Monday, but the surgeons wanted more time to confer and decide. Now the surgery is scheduled for tomorrow (Wednesday). It is Allen's birthday today. Thank you. Pastor Mike Wilder
Friday 9/4

Yesterday Allen underwent a 2nd surgery to set the leg. His injury left the leg completely broken off above the ankle and protruding through the flesh. His ankle was only attached by flesh and some tissues. The leg has been reset but requires much more intensive surgery from a major hospital. This afternoon he will be transported by ambulance to Northwestern Medical Center in Chicago. The surgery will probably be early next week. Pray that it can be done Monday or Tuesday even though it is Labor Day on Monday. If not they will have to redo what they did surgically yesterday. He will be in Chicago for about a week if all goes well. Then he will be placed in a nursing home or brought home with with home care medical professionals. This will require six weeks or more of intensive treatment. He will need to lay on his back during that time with very limited mobility. Jeannie is required to be home to continue her chemo therapy.

I thank all of you on their behalf for praying. The biggest concern remains healing from surgical wounds due to his kidney failure and diabetes. If he cannot heal then there will be dire consequences. Ask the Lord to provide this healing.

Many blessings, Pastor Mike

IBSA @ Prayer ~ Urgent Prayer for Former IBSA Music Director

.
Urgent prayer request for former IBSA music director Allen Mashbern

Allen Mashbern served Illinois Baptists for 23 years. Health issues forced him from active ministry due to kidney failure. Since leaving IBSA, He and his wife have faced numerous health issues. Currently, He is awaiting a kidney transplant at Barnes Hospital St Louis. Complications have delayed the surgery. And this past Monday night he fell in his yard and fractured his leg. The leg can be repaired but the greater concern is the healing. His diabetes causes major healing problems and he may loose his leg if it does not heal quickly. Dr's cannot do the kidney transplant until he is completely healed.

Allen’s wife, Jeannie, was diagnosed with breast cancer. She had the breast removed and is now undergoing chemo therapy. Every week new medical problems strike one of them. Also Jeannie's mother is near death in a local nursing home. Prayer is urgently needed for these faithful servants. Please share this request in church services on Wednesday and Sunday.

Notes and cards can be sent to:
