Download "Prayer that Changed History" by former IBSA Pastor

New Download: Brief Studies of Prayer in the Early Church

Pastor, you may remember that in early December 2007 I posted a complimentary download, "Praying Like Jesus: 10 Brief Studies in Prayer" by Rick Ezell. These were very popular so Rick sent another series called, "Prayer that Changed History: 7 Brief Studies of Prayer in the Early Church." These simple, one-page studies on prayer are ideal for a Wednesday evening, Sunday evening, or other time when you lead a less formal Bible study time. Here are the titles:

  1. The Indispensable and Distinguishing Feature (Acts 2:42)
  2. Prayer Brings God to Us (Acts 4:24)
  3. Prayer Changes Us (Acts 4:13)
  4. Prayer Unleashes the Power of God (Acts 4:31)
  5. Prayer Prepares Us to Share Our Faith Boldly (Acts 4:31)
  6. What Happens When A Church Prays? (Acts 12:5)
  7. The Prayer Force (Acts 6:1-4)

Access "Prayer that Changed History: 7 Brief Studies of Prayer in the Early Church" now...

Prayer is news at the SBC

Prayer is news at this year's Southern Baptist Convention annual meeting in Indianapolis.

A chaplains' luncheon and a Missional Network discussion also may yield a few lines of ink.

This year's prayer emphasis at the Southern Baptist Convention has been boosted by the efforts of Indianapolis-area pastors who have caught a vision of what can happen when people spend more time praying.

At last year's meeting of the State Convention of Baptists in Indiana, a first-of-its-kind prayer room featured videos, maps and other visual aids along with Bible verses, specific requests and journals to facilitate prayer. The room was filled throughout the annual meeting, and the results were overwhelming, Dale Eakes, this year's SBC prayer team coordinator, told Baptist Press.

"Churches are discovering more creative and innovative ways to incorporate prayer into their congregations," said Eakes, pastor of Warren Baptist Church in Indianapolis. "A local pastor shared with me that his church knew what worship was and that they were good at it, but prayer was not something they practiced very much together.

"He has changed his services so that now instead of worshipping 95 percent and praying only 5 percent or less, they have sought to include prayer in at least 50 percent of their service. The results: New converts have been added and a greater sense of the need to do something great in the name of Jesus is sweeping over the congregation," Eakes added.

Indianapolis churches are realizing a passion for church planting and evangelism on a level that has not been seen in a long time, the prayer coordinator said.

"The great part is that the leaders of these ministries are local pastors who understand the need for prayer and have taken that passion to their local churches," Eakes said. "The local association is on fire to see something great happen in the name and grace of Jesus. This is a fire that is quickly spreading throughout the state."

At the SBC annual meeting, messengers are urged to pray throughout the convention hall during the hour preceding each session, and they're asked to visit the prayer room to ask God to direct the decisions being made during the business proceedings.

"The prayer room at the SBC is a national ministry, but it will be driven by the passion of the local prayer warriors," Eakes said.===>Click headline for complete article . . .

SBC National Evangelism Initiative includes Prayer Strategies

Page calls for 'soul winning' focus
by Mark Kelly

INDIANAPOLIS (BP)--Fulfilling the mission Christ gave His followers -- bringing lost souls into God's Kingdom -- will be the focus of the 151st session of the Southern Baptist Convention when it convenes June 10-11 at the Indiana Convention Center.

The meeting will extend a theme of spiritual awakening that has characterized the tenure of Frank Page as SBC president, pressing on to the evangelistic outreach that flows naturally from renewal.

For a complete schedule of events, go here.

"The motivation and power for evangelism arises out of spiritual awakening," said Page, who is completing his second term as SBC president. "I keep going back to Acts 1:8, which says, 'When the Holy Spirit comes, you shall receive power.' And when we have been stirred by God's spirit, we reach out to the lost and God draws people to Himself."

That's why Page said he selected Acts 2:47b as the watchword for the gathering: "And every day the Lord added to them those who were being saved" (HCSB).

"The recent report of a decline in baptisms and membership in the Southern Baptist Convention re-emphasizes that for too long we have been attempting to raise baptisms among non-revived people in non-revived churches," Page said. "The lack of connection with lost people and the lack of urgency for soul-winning and personal evangelism is a direct indication of our lack of spiritual passion and love for the lost.

"Even when there is a love and a concern for the lost, sometimes we have a total disconnect with the culture in which we live," Page added. "Many of our people simply do not know how to relate to people in 21st-century culture and have been frustrated at their inability to communicate the Gospel. Many believers do not know people who are outside the Kingdom and often do not even know their own neighbors."

Under the banner of "Fulfilling the Mission," Southern Baptist leaders will introduce a multifaceted long-term strategy for helping churches evangelize their neighborhoods, states, country and world. The 10-year National Evangelism Initiative was a priority Page set for his time in office when he was elected in Greensboro, N.C., in 2006.

"The moment I was elected, I knew I wanted to encourage a continent-wide evangelism strategy," Page said. "A large number of people have been saying to us, 'Don't just tell us what to do, but show us how to do it.' So I approached the North American Mission Board and they have worked with our state and associational partners to come forward with a strategy that will help us know both what to do and how to do it."

Unlike some programs that drop a big box of material on the desk and leave it to the pastor to figure out whether it can be implemented in his church and how to do it, the National Evangelism Initiative will offer a menu of strategies in four areas: praying, engaging, sowing and harvesting, Page said. Churches will be able to pick and choose strategies that will work in their unique contexts.

"There will be many elements produced so churches of all sizes and all ethnic backgrounds in all areas of the continent can take part," Page said. "They will be able to pick and choose from various strategies, tools and emphases. It will be very flexible.

"Of all the things that could come out of the meeting in Indianapolis, the greatest for our continent would be that we come away with a common direction in presenting a very positive, life-transforming message about Christ."===>Click headline for compelte news release . . .

Connecting intercessors in prayer for city transformation.

FOCUS... connecting intercessors in prayer for city transformation.

"Don't just go to church. Be the church."

That's the idea behind Faith in Action, a nationwide initiative for churches who are looking for creative, effective ways to reach out to their communities. On Sunday, April 27, churches all over San Diego County will put their faith into action. Many will cancel their morning service, moving out into their community to serve through a variety of projects. They will paint local schools and community centers, landscape backyards on Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, give water to marathon runners, and engage in many more ways, all toward the goal of meeting whatever needs they can.

As you pray this week, please remember the churches who are participating in Faith in Action:

  • Pray for the churches as they finalize their projects, asking God to be in the details of all the arrangements and preparations.
  • Pray for receptivity in each neighborhood, that people in the community will come join church members in the projects through which they're serving.
  • Pray that God will use Faith in Action to give churches His heart to reach their communities and build bridges to future community connection.
  • Pray that church members will be prepared to share the love of Christ with those who ask, "Why are you doing this?"

Click here for some examples of specific Faith in Action requests from San Diego churches. Thank you for your prayers; we look forward to sharing with you about how God is working!

Baptist Association Holds Strateigc Retreat for Pastors

San Diego Pastor’s Prayer Retreat Recap
by Thomas Bush

50 San Diego evangelical pastors journeyed to Julian, CA [February 29- March 1, 2008] to spend an extended time with the Lord and each other at the recent San Diego Pastor’s Prayer Retreat.

In the midst of the 2008 and 2009 years of national and associational city-focused outreach, the Lord placed it on the heart of the local Southern Baptist Associational Leadership Team to organize and host this “first of its kind” prayer event. Evangelical pastors from across the city were invited to spend time praying with and for each other, with the belief that God would meet them as they humbled themselves before Him.

In conjunction with the pastor’s prayer retreat, prayer teams and prayer partners on-site, around San Diego County, and across the nation, prayed for the pastors as they met. God was faithful to His Word and to their prayers and met the pastors in powerful ways.

Friday afternoon began with over 30 pastors and leaders attending the early-bird session taught by Rev. Phil Miglioratti, entitled, "Leading My Church to Become a House of Prayer." During the only teaching session of the retreat, Pastor Phil challenged the leaders to be “prayer champions.” For the church to become a house of prayer, its leaders must be “prayer champions.”

The prayer leadership of a church begins with the pastor; however, anyone can be a prayer champion! Here are the key focus areas for “prayer champions”:

  1. Practice prayer: A “prayer champion” must pray himself. The practice of prayer cannot be completely delegated to a prayer leader or prayer team.

  2. Preach on prayer: A “prayer champion” must lead by providing a biblical foundation for prayer for those he leads.

  3. Promote prayer – “Prayer Champions” must cast the vision for having a church or ministry saturated with prayer. ===>Click headline to access complete article . . .

SBC @ Prayer ~ San Diego Churches Hit the Streets

April is here and plans for Faith In Action Sunday (April 27) are well underway. See www.putyourfaithinaction.com for the 40+churches around San Diego County that will be reaching out to "Be The Church" on that date.

Your prayers will especially make a difference this month as churches finalize projects, gather volunteers, connect with their neighbors, and work together for God's purposes.

We will be sharing with you specific prayer needs of participating churches as we receive them. For now, please pray for these requests:

1. Pray that God would assist the churches in finalizing community projects for April 27. For example: Hilltop Baptist Church plans to work with a local retailer and paint company to do a makeover at a community shelter.

2. Pray for the receptivity of the community to come and work with the church.

3. Pray that the outreach experience would be positive for the church members and for the community.

4. Pray that God will use Faith In Action to give churches His heart to reach their communities and build bridges to future community connection.

5. Pray that church members would be prepared to share the love of Christ with those who ask "why are you doing this?" questions about Faith In Action.

Final note: Save May 18 on your calendars to come and hear praise reports of all that God did through Faith in Action.

Thanks in advance for your prayers!

Court Case: Taxes or Spiritual Awakening?

A Southern Baptist church that purchased a former Wal-Mart is awaiting a federal court ruling on whether Carlinville, Ill., can block its worship services at the building. Photo Terms of Use

CARLINVILLE, Ill. (BP)--Carlinville Southern Baptist Church "can do everything we want in the new facility except use it for worship," the church's First Amendment attorney, Daniel Dalton, said.

Dalton made the statement following a federal court ruling allowing the Illinois church to remodel a former Wal-Mart to accommodate the growing congregation.

"It was actually a great day for us when the federal court in Springfield entered an order allowing us to continue renovating the building and to utilize it for offices, a daycare center and other things," said Dalton of Royal Oak, Mich.

Still ahead, however: A decision on more complicated First Amendment issues that will allow the church to also worship on the property.

Wal-Mart, as it has done in many communities, built a new super store in Carlinville, a community of 6,000 residents located between Springfield, Ill., and St. Louis and attempted to sell their old building. After six months, Wal-Mart had been unable to sell the property so Carlinville Southern Baptist Church, having experienced significant growth the past few years, purchased the 60,000-square-foot building.

The former Wal-Mart was zoned commercial by the city of Carlinville which allowed uses as an "auditorium" defined "as part of a church, theater, school or recreation building." At the time, however, churches were only being allowed in areas zoned "R" for religious or rehabilitative, even though two other churches in town already were located in property zoned commercial.

The church applied to have the property rezoned "R" but was denied because the church is tax-exempt.

Carlinville Mayor Robert Schwab told the local news media the city has been ravaged by business closings and needs the revenue of a commercial enterprise rather than a church. "The city must look out for the economic interest of the entire community," Schwab said.

The church attempted to meet with city officials to resolve the issue amicably, but instead the city filed a lawsuit in state court seeking an injunction to prevent the church from renovating the facility or moving any of its offices to the site. The church filed suit in the U.S. District Court in Springfield alleging violation of its First and Fourteenth Amendment rights as well as violations of the Religious Land Use and Institutionalized Persons Act (RLUIPA).

RLUIPA is a federal statute intended to protect churches and religious institutions from discrimination and unreasonable burdens imposed by land use regulations. Courts have held that RLUIPA prevents governments from discriminating against churches just because they are tax-exempt and thus reduce tax revenues for a city.

Carlinville pastor Tim Rhodus asked Christians to pray that the matter will be resolved quickly so the church can expand its witness to the community.

"This is not about a building, and we're not just trying to win a court case," Rhodus told The Illinois Baptist. "We're asking God for a spiritual awakening for our entire community. Everyone in this area is paying attention, and we need God to show up in undeniable ways so that undecided masses recognize His power."

Martin King is editor of The Illinois Baptist newsjournal.
