SBC @ Prayer ~ Praying for Rain with the Governor

Ga. governor, others, gather at capitol to 'pray up a storm'

Posted on Nov 14, 2007 | by Joe Westbury ATLANTA (BP)--More than 250 Georgia residents gathered on the steps of the state capitol Nov. 13 to pray for a blessing which many had taken for granted -– clean drinking water that has become increasingly scarce in recent months.

Gov. Sonny Perdue, a Georgia Baptist church member, led the lunch-hour prayer service to ask God to restore the rain after a drought that has resulted in record lows at the state's major reservoir and prompted a water fight between Georgia, Florida and Alabama.

Lake Lanier, located north of Atlanta, dropped to its lowest level in 21 years earlier in November. All outside water use has been banned. If rains continue to hold off, Lake Lanier is expected to drop by Dec. 7 to its lowest point since it was built in the 1950s.

As water restrictions are being tightened, fines of up to $1,000 are being levied against first-time offenders, with water being cut off to repeat offenders. Pike's Nursery, the state's largest nursery, declared bankruptcy on Nov. 14 citing a tumble in business since plants and yards can no longer be watered.

Georgia's last serious dry spell occurred in 1986 but explosive growth has pushed the state's water resources to the limits.===>Click headline for the complete article . . .

562 Baptized ... In a parking lot! ... Give thanks!

NewSpring Church, a fast-growing Southern Baptist congregation in Anderson, South Carolina, baptized 562 believers during a celebration in September, staged in its parking lot. "We invited people to come tailgate before the baptisms like they would before a football game," said Tony Morgan, the church's spokesman. People set up tents and brought their grills, while pastors in three above-ground pools took about 90 minutes to baptize the 562 people. The public celebration was the culmination of a five-week series preached by NewSpring pastor Perry Noble titled 'Illuminate' in which he compared a life without Christ to a life with Christ. "Through that series we had around 800 people receive Christ," Morgan said.

One Thousand Join in Prayer for 82 Heroes

82 new missionaries answer God's call
By Don Graham

>>>Note: As you read these testimonies, you will gain insights into how to ask the Lord for additional missionaries to hear and heed the call . .

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (BP)--Her face is etched in Michael's* mind.

Ten years ago, the Texas-born businessman remembers knocking on the door of a quiet, thatched-roof home in a small Russian town. It was his first mission trip. An elderly woman answered and Michael offered her a Bible. That's when his life changed forever.

"She fell on her knees, crying, thanking me," he said. Her eyes glistening with tears, the woman explained she had lost her husband during World War II and didn't have money to buy a Bible. For years, she prayed someone would bring her one.

"[That] will be with me until the day I die," Michael said. "I never thought in a million years God would use me to touch someone's life in another country, but He did."

Michael believes the Lord used the encounter to call him to the mission field. Now, he and his wife are headed to Asia.

The couple were among 82 new missionaries appointed by the International Mission Board Nov. 7 in Springfield, Ill., during the annual meeting and 100th anniversary celebration of the Illinois Baptist State Association.

"You are here tonight because you've recognized God's call as a personal call," IMB President Jerry Rankin told the missionaries before a gathering of more than 1,500 people at Springfield's Prairie Capital Convention Center.

"You've felt God's call in diverse ways.... He took your background and your experience and said, 'I've got a place for you.'"

Rankin's point was made evident as the missionaries shared stories of their personal call to missions.

Michael's wife, Jennifer, said she knew the Lord was leading her to go overseas when she was suddenly overwhelmed by an urge to write a $500 check for a cow. At church one Sunday, Jennifer remembers her pastor talking about the needs of a missionary in India. Cows were valuable to the missionaries there, the pastor explained, but too expensive to buy. He asked the church if they would donate the money for the cow.

"I remember being so excited when I put 'for a cow' on the memo line of that check that I felt like I could cry," Jennifer said.

PERSONAL CALLINGS

But the story of their calling was just one of many shared during the appointment services. For instance:

-- "It began with one cup of coffee on the very last day of a vision trip to [Northern Africa]," said Jason*, a member of First Baptist Church in Jonesboro, Ark. "The missionaries said, 'We need college students,' and as a collegiate minister, I promised I would send them. Five years and over 70 student summer missionaries later, God has called me to go back." Jason will return to Northern Africa with his wife, Amanda.

-- "I was a teacher desiring to do more for God. He showed me the need as I served as a journeyman in South Asia. I went, I smelled the poverty, I saw the masses and I heard their emptiness," said Erick,* who will now return to South Asia with his wife, Colleen.

-- "I came to Christ as a child through a missionary's testimony," said Heidi.* "As a short-term missionary in Western Europe, I saw the look of wonder and hope on a refugee woman's face as I shared God's amazing love. God called me to stay."

-- "One day God spoke, telling me I had run out of reasons to not go overseas. Terrified, I waited a week before telling my wife," recalled Jason.*

Said Jason's wife, Kelli, "Finally, he confessed his calling to me, only to discover what God had confirmed in my heart a week earlier through the Book of Jeremiah. We are obeying God's call and moving to Central Asia."

-- "We were told that you don't have to be a seminary graduate to be a missionary. You can be a treasurer, a teacher or in music. Turns out, we are all three," said Tracy Delac, a member of McGregor Baptist Church in Fort Myers, Fla. Tracy and her husband, David, will serve in South Africa.

-- "I was Jonah ... a financially successful project manager who felt God's call to missions. I ran. After a whale incident, God opened my eyes to His true treasure -- people," said Philip,* who, along with his wife, Alisa, will soon be sharing Christ in the Middle East.

-- "As a preschooler ... I gave my mom a note while skating on our driveway: 'God's sending me to the mission field.' Now 48 years later, God's sending us to Guatemala," said Glynis Miller. Glynis and her husband, David, are members of Abilene Baptist Church in Martinez, Ga.

-- "While homeschooling our four children, God used the missionary biographies we read around the family dinner table to lead us to a forgotten people group," said Becky.* She and her husband, Scott, are headed to East Africa.

-- "As an ISC couple, basketball opened the doors to a closed Buddhist village. Softball got us into a Muslim school. Today, God continues to use my passion for sports to share Christ's love," said Clint,* who will serve in the Middle East with his wife, Natalie.

-- "Ten years ago, a scarred temple servant in Taiwan grabbed my hand. Hopelessly lost, he was begging me for help. Right then, I asked God to use me to penetrate this darkness," said Rob,* who will minister among the people of Asia with his wife, Alicia.

-- "In Asia in 1999, I played guitar all night long with a local rock band. One week later I was able to share Jesus with the bass player, my friend Shaddad. God used his resistance to the Gospel to increase my passion for reaching Muslims," said Tanner,* who is leaving for Western Europe with his wife, Audrey.

Rankin, the IMB president, compared the missionaries' call to that of Moses -- one of providence, purpose and empowerment. He admonished them not to lose focus and reminded the missionaries that just as the Lord promised to go with Moses, He would go with them, too.

"The purpose for which you're going is to deliver a lost world from bondage and sin and set them free by the power of Jesus Christ," Rankin stressed.

"Why would Jesus tell us to be His witnesses, even to the ends of the earth? Because it's predicated on the fact that we have received the power of God's Holy Spirit."

NO ONE EXEMPT

Rankin also commended the missionaries for their obedience to God's call, while lamenting the number of Southern Baptists who don't follow the Great Commission.

"It's not unusual that after an appointment service or a missions conference someone will come up to me and say, 'Dr. Rankin, I would be willing to go as a missionary, but God has not called me,'" Rankin said. "I've never figured out how to respond to that tactfully. What I want to say is, 'Excuse me? You're a child of God? To whom do you think the Great Commission was given -- just a handful of disciples on a hillside in Galilee?'

"We reason that if we haven't had a burning bush or a Damascus Road experience, we're exempt," he explained.

The 82 missionaries join the ranks of more than 5,300 other Southern Baptist missionaries already serving around the world. Rankin pointed out the number represents only .03 percent of all Southern Baptists, less than one out of every 3,000.

"We need to examine our hearts and our willingness to bring our lives into alignment with the heart of God," Rankin said. "If God is calling you to go, it's not enough to say, 'I'll pray more; I'll give more generously; I'll go on an occasional short-term mission trip.' You don't argue with God.

"A lost world is waiting for someone who's willing to say, 'I'll go.'"

SBC Ambassador of Prayer Impacts SBC President

Houses of prayer
By Frank Page

TAYLORS, S.C. (BP)--During this year's SBC Pastors' Conference I was part of a breakout session led by Dr. T.W. Hunt. This dear man of God has spent years seeking the face of God and also teaching God's people about prayer.

Dr. Hunt called for God's people to get serious about prayer. He has encouraged us to have a prayer focus, to bring our convention to a God-centeredness. He spoke eloquently about certain qualities in the Godhead. These qualities are otherness, love, humility, Christ's supremacy and nobility.

He wants us to see the otherness of God and see that accomplished in our churches, institutions and in our convention. In other words, we are to follow the principle of our Lord Jesus who was constantly putting the needs of others before himself. If we did so, imagine what our convention would be like. Instead of pushing our own agendas, what would happen if we saw others as more important than ourselves?

Can you imagine what would happen to us if sacrificial divine love, exampled by our Lord Jesus, was exampled in our convention? Let us love each other with God's kind of love.

Dr. Hunt's call for the quality of humility is one of great need. In my presidential sermon at the SBC annual meeting, I stated that Southern Baptist preachers seem to have the unique ability to "strut while sitting down." Can you imagine what would happen if we quit speaking negatively of one another, but affirmed others constantly? Dr. Hunt also spoke of the need to recognize Christ's supremacy. In other words, let us be Jesus people. Let us think like Him, feel like Him, act like Him and relate like Him.

The quality of nobility is desperately needed. Similar to Christlikeness, it shows that we are being prepared for eternal nobility by focusing on His word and way.

This call to prayer echoes that which I have been saying over these past months. Jesus wanted His churches to be called "houses of prayer." Let us not disappoint our Lord.

Frank Page is president of the Southern Baptist Convention and pastor of First Baptist Church in Taylors, S.C.

SBC @ Prayer ~ Pray, Clean, Help

Near the flames, Saddleback rallies to help
By Norm Miller

LAKE FOREST, Calif. (BP)--Three of the 18 fires that ravaged Southern California in recent days scorched portions of the valley where Saddleback Valley Community Church is located.

Saddleback's facilities escaped the rampaging flames. But the crisis lit a fire of urgency for Saddleback members as they mobilized for disaster relief efforts to provide food, housing, comfort and counseling.

"It's been a busy, busy week," Rick Warren, Saddleback's senior pastor, said on CNN's "Larry King Live" show Oct. 26. The church's 128-acre campus served as an evacuation center for refugees and as a "refreshment center for about 500 of the firefighters," Warren said. "We have been housing animals, pets, feeding people."

With more than 22,000 attendees, Saddleback also has about 3,500 small groups "in every city in Southern California," many of whom welcomed evacuees into their homes, Warren said.

Students of the church's college ministry, CRAVE, worked alongside firefighters on the fire lines, Warren recounted. On Saturday morning, more than 600 people from 120 small groups went into the hardest-hit areas of San Diego to pray, clean up and offer help.

"As the fires have raged this week, I've once again seen the undeniable importance and benefit of being a part of a small group," Warren said in an e-mail to church members.

Saddleback also has dispatched about 100 "volunteer chaplains" who are "counseling, caring, comforting, coaching, praying for people," Warren said. And the church is a "clearinghouse for donations, as we have been getting food and getting money out to those who -- who literally lost everything this week," he added.

On Oct. 25, Warren appeared on Fox News Channel's "Hannity & Colmes" program, when Colmes cited an article Warren wrote about dealing with grief in response to the 2003 California wildfires that approached Warren's backyard.

Warren noted that Saddleback's counselors seek to encourage fire victims in five ways:

-- release the grief.

-- receive help from others.

-- refuse to be bitter.

-- remember what's important.

-- rely on God.

Warren said his sermon last weekend, titled "How do you look up when you're burned out?" dealt with aspects of the tragedy.

Ken Blanchard, author of the best-selling "One Minute Manager" whose San Diego-area home was consumed in the wildfires, joined Warren for two of Saddleback's four services Oct. 28.

Blanchard, who also appeared on Larry King Oct. 26, commented about his loss: "As a follower of Jesus, I just tried to quiet myself because I knew that He wanted me to have peace and joy and righteousness." He continued, "I am so proud of this country in crisis, but I also really want and hope and pray that when times are good, we can have compassion and love and serve each other."

Saddleback's website details how church members and others can help:

"Pray: Our community needs our prayers and spiritual support. Pray for the families that have been displaced, for the thousands of public safety workers, and for the rebuilding and restoration process to come. Go: Help with clean-up efforts and resource distribution in the areas most affected by the fires. This is a great opportunity for your small group to make a difference! If you'd like to serve this way, send an email to localrelief@saddleback.net.

"Let our local firefighters, law enforcement officers, city management personnel, and other public safety workers know how much you appreciate them. Here are a couple ideas for you or your small group:

"-- Write a thank-you note and send it to your local fire station, sheriff's office, or city hall....

"-- Reach out to neighbors, family members, or friends who work in public safety with a gesture of your appreciation.

"-- Invite your local public safety workers to one of the services at Saddleback Church the weekend of November 3-4 for a public recognition of their efforts."
