Is This Church A Praying Church? How to Diagnose

Diagnose: Is the church a praying church? ?
Dr. Chuck Lawless

Prayer is the means by which we get the power to grow a God-honoring church. Most leaders are well aware of this truth. The problem, though, is this: most churches pray reactively rather than proactively. That is, they respond in prayer when a need develops, but they seldom take charge in prayer by seeking God's face before a problem develops. Even our prayer lists reflect this tendency, as we include on the list primarily those who have made known their need for prayer.

In my book, "Discipled Warriors," I compare "churches that talk about prayer" with "churches that really pray." Perhaps this comparison is a starting point to evaluate whether a church is a praying church:

Churches that talk about prayer . . .

* tell people to pray.
* announce prayer meetings.
* preach about prayer.
* may have a prayer list.
* may have a prayer ministry as one among many.
* have leaders who talk about prayer.

Churches that really pray . . .

* teach people to pray.
* actually pray at prayer meetings.
* preach about prayer and pray during preaching.
* intentionally pray through the prayer list.
* have a prayer ministry that covers every other ministry.
* have leaders who model prayer.

Here are some other ways to determine whether a church is a praying church===>Click headline to access . .

SBC @ Prayer: Virginia Tech + NDP + SFC + CrossOver +

NAMB HEADER

Pray concerning the tragedy on the Virginia Tech Campus:

* Please pray for comfort for the families and friends of the 33 people who needlessly died. Ask God to heal the 20 people who were injured in the shootings.
* Pray for the many impromptu prayer rooms that have been set up for the Virginia Tech students. May people onsite minister to the students as long as needed.
* Lift up students on campuses all over North American and the world asking for God's protection from these types of catastrophes as the students consider the reality of their own mortality.
* Praise God for the many Southern Baptist who immediately came - sharing God's love, grace, comfort, and compassion. Pray for strength and endurance for them as they continue reaching out, and that God will make them sensitive to His will guiding their words and actions.
* Pray for God to turn around for good what was meant for evil. Pray that many will be drawn to Christ in a bountiful harvest.

President Bush said to the students at the memorial service, April 17, "People who have never met you are praying for you. There's a power in these prayers, a real power, and in times like this we can find comfort in the grace and guidance of a loving God. As the Scriptures tell us, 'Don't be overcome by evil, but overcome evil by good'" (Romans 12:21).

Flying High in Prayer!

Airplane passengers practice 'prayer flying' over Ohio

Posted on Apr 11, 2007 | by Erin Roach

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (BP)--Some pilots took the mandate to pray for the salvation of their neighbors seriously on Good Friday when 10 single-engine airplanes flew over Ohio, carrying people praying for the 11 million residents of the state's 88 counties.

"A plane is a good way to cover a lot of ground," Kenneth Wortman, 73, a pilot from Lima, Ohio, told The Cincinnati Enquirer. "In the Bible, God tells us the fields are ripe for the harvest. From the air, a person can see a lot of fields."

Wortman got the idea for PrayerFlight last fall while talking with a friend about praying for the lost. His love of flying helped him visualize the mission field, The Enquirer said, and he soon got others to join him for two regional prayer flights before the statewide effort April 6.

"You see rows and rows of houses, and you know they are full of people you are praying for," Samantha Ciminillo, 18, a member of Teens for Christ, told the newspaper. Ciminillo was one of six youths from the organization to join the pilots on their December prayer excursion===>Click headline to access complete article. .

IBSA @ Prayer ~ Prayer Breakthrough in Clarksville

Phil:

It was my hope and prayer when I asked you to come to Clarksville Baptist Church to have a seminar on prayer that the membership would be given a new and greater understanding about prayer. God worked in the hearts of many through your ministry here to awaken in us a greater vision and understanding of the need for corporate prayer.

Your suggestion to name the seminar "Prayer Breakthrough" was prophetic, because there was truly a prayer breakthrough on the Wednesday after the seminar held during our Awana program when four souls received Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord. Then on Sunday, we had another young girl come forward for baptism and membership in obedience to her Lord. Our country church has never seen so much blessing before. Our hearts are full of joy and a growing expectation that God has started a fire in our hearts for the lost and the healing of our land.

Fire Rallies Prayer that Impacts Missions

Prayer fuels church's heart for missions

By Karen L. Willoughby

PAMPA, Texas (BP)--What happens when two fires merge? A church on the grassy plains of the Texas panhandle is finding out. When First Baptist Church in Pampa burned to the ground in 1973, the congregation rallied to rebuild -– and found a new energy for reaching out to people in their community and, through the Cooperative Program, around the world.

Johnny Funderburg, First Baptist's pastor since August 2004, was a pastor in Whitesboro, Texas, when his home burned to the ground in 1997."When you lose everything, it just humbles you," Funderburg said. "I think God used that opportunity of my being tender, needy, to draw me to Him. A passion for God came out of that ... and what naturally flowed from that was to begin to pray and just trust Him."===>Click headline to access complete article. . .

Prayerdriving America, State-by-State

I had just returned from my third mission trip to India in February when I attended the Prayer Conference in March 2006, in Ashville. The burning question I had for God was “Where next, Lord? My life is poured out before you. What do you want to with my life?” I knew He was going to speak to me at the conference so I listened carefully to every speaker.

Mr. Blackaby’s theme was to obey immediately and completely. I’d been doing that pretty much all of the 55 years I’ve been a Christian. But I had the sense that what He was going to ask of me would require obedience immediately and completely like never before. Mr. Blackaby issued a challenge for someone to go to Rwanda to pray and see what God was doing. If fact, another speaker said the same thing. God said, “That person is you, Cindy. Go.” What could I say but okay.

Just as clearly as I have ever heard God speak to my heart, He also said that it wasn’t just Rwanda. He also wanted me to spend the rest of my life in “prayer in every nation”. He was calling me to step into every nation and pray. Now I might not make it to every nation, but I was to keep going and keep praying until the day I die.

How could one poor and humble widow accomplish such a task? I had no idea, but I knew I must obey immediately and completely. At first, my friends thought I had really gone over the edge this time. I went to China by myself in Oct 2005 (but that’s another story); now I wanted to go to Rwanda!!

Starting the first of July, God clearly directed that I was to go, I was to go alone, and I would see what God was doing and what He wants to do in Rwanda. In a period of 8 days—from one Sunday to the next—God provided $1,500 for the airfare through 5 people. Then within the next 2 weeks He provided the remaining amount of $1,500 and I was on my way. Everyone saw very clearly that I was to go, go alone, and see what God is doing and wants to do in Rwanda.

I taught English, made friends, and lost my heart to the people of Rwanda and the IMB missionaries there. My heart is forever committed to the work in Rwanda. I came home and put together all that I saw and learned and share with all who want to know about what happened in Rwanda, why it happened and what God wants to do there. He is looking for people who are willing to stand in the gap, stand the battle and pray for and go to Rwanda.

It has been a year now and the calling of prayer and missions is deeper and richer than ever before. Praying for all the nations on their soil, among their people is the goal of my life. My ministry is Prayer In Every Nation. How it will come about is not my concern but God’s. My concern is to walk through every open door God provides and pray.

In November 2006, God spoke again and said, “The hardest and the most needy nation is the USA. I have been burdened for our great land and have waited upon God to see how I fit into what He is doing and wants to do. I began to pray across America more intensely than every before for renewal and revival. I just returned from a mission trip to New England. I prayed through Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, and Washington, D.C. in March. I prayed through Virginia and West Virginia in February. My goal is to prayerdrive all 50 states.

I take pictures of signs of all sorts in a specific location within the state and use them to formulate my prayers. For example: in Connecticut the sign of the Vineyard Family Restaurant becomes the prayer Help all recognize that You, Lord, are the vine and we are the branches. May they be Your vineyard and reap the harvest; may Christians hear the call to go to every community in this state, every state, and every nation with the gospel and to pray. in Massachusetts a wrong way sign becomes Help them to see that they are choosing the wrong way and are being deceived by Satan. Show them that Christ is the only way. Help them choose not to go the wrong way of the world but to follow the Risen Savior. in Vermont a sign advertising Nationwide Insurance becomes May Your light shine brightly that all of American nationwide would see a state that is sold out to Jesus and taking the gospel to every person.

I keep a prayer journal and I’m creating a prayer photo album.

It’s amazing how simple ordinary signs become a catalyst for prayer. I’m now always on the lookout for avenues of prayer everywhere I go. Walking or driving, life is prayer.

As opportunities arise, I’ll continue my journey across America….and the world. Every aspect of our society needs prayerwalking and prayerdriving.

Again, I ask the question, “What difference can one poor, humble widow make?” I don’t know, but I do know that my response is to obey immediately and completely and leave the results to God. I know that on that day when I stand before God, I want to hear Him say, “Well done, faithful servant.” That requires of me that this day I follow Him and go in prayer.

He has wired my abilities and orchestrated my life for this calling. When I get in my car and see the road before me, I feel the presence of the Spirit of God as together we journey across this nation—and to every nation—through prayer.

Prayer Call for Student Revival

On Thursday, April 5, 2007...
18 colleges and universities will have a 24-7 prayer rooms open!

Stop and think about that for a moment! Praise God for this exciting news.

Last year as we were praying for one campus each day to be open...God had a larger plan. Recently we received a request for the Thursday Prayer Call group to pray for the student led prayer effort that would be happening in Ohio.

We will re-start our "physical" prayer calls each Thursdays in April because of this request. Allison Brooks from LoveOSU has asked for prayer coverage for the college campuses and universities across Ohio, as they move into a 40 day season of 24/7 Prayer Rooms all across their state. They are looking for those from the "older generations" to join them in praying. God is continuing to draw college students to prayer for the nation. Many times that leads to open prayer rooms on their campuses.

Arizona students just finished their 40 days of 24-7 prayer rooms all across their state. For many of us, who have participated in prayer walking a college campus near our homes... Did you ever think that God had something like this in His plan? He is on mission, will we adjust and join Him?

Thursday Prayer Call for Revival and Spiritual Awakening -- April Conference Calls Each Thursday in April from 1:00 - 2:00 PM (EST) Thursday Prayer Call will host a prayer meeting each Thursday in April by conference call. We join others all across our nation to pray for the student led prayer movement that will be happening on the college campuses and universities.

In the state of Ohio, a statewide kickoff was held in Columbus on March 31st. Their official prayer effort started on April 1st and will continue for 40 days, covering Ohio campuses in 24-7 prayer. They are looking for "older generations" to join them in praying and to join them "onsite" at various locations, on their college campuses and universities.

We are thankful that God has allowed "Moms in Touch" and "National Day of Prayer" groups to link with us for prayer coverage for them. You can go to: Thursday Prayer Call for Revival or http://amomwhoprays.blogspot.com/ to find locations and more information. Here is the info for the call -
Dial: (563) 843-7429
Please note: This number is NOT toll free Passcode: 790450#

As everyone is getting onto the call, we will open with a short time of sharing what God is doing and then we will pray together. Thank you for being a part of the Thursday Prayer Call for Revival Ministry.

Persistently prevailing,Linda Bemis

Thursday Prayer Call for Revival, is a "grass-roots" initiative, we are not endorsed by NAMB, it is our heart to support our denominational work of prayer. Many on this list are from Southern Baptist churches, many are not. May information be shared and an awareness be raised "across" denominational lines of God's prayer work. Send us a brief note to share what God is doing in and through your ministry of prayer or to add your prayer conference to our prayer list.

Prayer & Empowering Kingdom Growth

Prayer & Empowering Kingdom Growth
By Kenneth S. Hemphill

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (BP)--As we read the New Testament, we are not left with any question about the importance of the Kingdom of God in the life and teaching of Jesus. His ministry was announced by John the Baptist with the startling words: Repent for the kingdom of heaven is at hand (Matt. 3:2). And after the time of Jesus' temptation, we are told that He "began to preach" the message of the Kingdom (4:17) -- the clear implication being that His teaching on the Kingdom was not an occasional message, but a consistent message. Even a cursory reading of the Gospels will illustrate this.

And this passion continued to the very end of His earthly life. A passage that often goes unnoticed as it relates to this is Acts 1:3. Luke tells us that during Jesus' last 40 days, He was speaking of the things concerning the Kingdom of God.There can be no question that the Kingdom was the heartbeat of our Lord and should therefore be uppermost in our thinking.

THE KINGDOM –- ITS EMPOWERING

Since the Kingdom of God is about God's rule and reign on earth -- in, around and through His people —- it is apparent that it is a divine activity which requires supernatural empowering. The Kingdom of God was and is about a totally new way to live.

It is comprehensive, involving all aspects of our lives. It is compelling because it exhibits the power of God unleashed in the lives of His people.

The Kingdom of God is about God's right to invade our human existence with His Kingdom authority. For this reason it requires divine dynamite -- the person of the Holy Spirit. The Book of Acts gives us a living illustration of the working of the Holy Spirit through early Christians both individually and corporately. Just as Jesus commanded His followers to remain in Jerusalem until they had received the promised Holy Spirit (1:4-5), we too must never attempt any Kingdom activity in our human strength. If we do so, we will be doomed to failure, caught in the trap of carnal Christianity, enslaved to the Avis "we try harder" syndrome. We cannot produce Kingdom results without spiritual empowering.

For this reason, Empowering Kingdom Growth is not another program challenging Southern Baptists to greater activity. We have demonstrated a tendency to attempt to solve spiritual problems simply by doing more things, but this is counterproductive. Empowering Kingdom Growth is a challenge for each individual and church to focus on God's priorities and allow the Holy Spirit to work through us to produce Kingdom results. We cannot go forward without recognizing the importance of surrendering ourselves to the constant infilling of the Spirit===>CLick headline for complete article and website resources . . .

IBSA @ Prayer ~ Rekindling the Call: Feedback

Dear Brother Phil

Just a brief note to thank you and the Prayer Ministries for helping sponsor the Rekindling the Call Retreat at Lake Sallasteeska. This was one of the best 24 hours of my life.

It help me change my mind, direction, and purpose in my life and was a great encouragement.

My time with God in Psalm 62 was valuable and sweet and such a blessing.

Please tell Cheryl Dorsey I am praying for her to have God's guidance as she leads out in the prayer-focused break out sessions at the SALT conference.

If you will pray for the swords that I laid down - procrastination - unbelief - not following through - laziness - inability - to stay down I would appreciate it.

Ready for Spiritual Awakening?

Are you ready for a spiritual awakening?
by Claude King, editor in chief of leadership and adult publishing at LifeWay Christian Resources

In a spiritual awakening people's lives are changed radically. Often a spiritual awakening results in a changed society in a city or a nation."

"Repent, then, and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped out, that times of refreshing may come from the Lord, and that he may send the Christ, who has been appointed for you – even Jesus." (Acts 3:19-20 NIV)

Peter had just healed a crippled man at the temple gate, and a crowd came running to see what had taken place. Peter preached to the crowd and invited them to repent so that "times of refreshing" might come from the Lord. And many did: "Many who heard the message believed, and the number of men grew to about five thousand." (Acts 4:4 NIV) The early Church was in the midst of a spiritual awakening. Not long before on the Day of Pentecost 3,000 accepted Peter's message and were added to the Church. Those early believers experienced life like most of us have never tasted
