What is the Impact of a Praying Pastor?

Study asks: What do SBC's leading churches have in common?

By Libby Lovelace

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (BP)--In recent years, leaders in the Southern Baptist Convention and the broader evangelical world have sounded the alarm that churches are becoming less and less effective in evangelism. Baptisms among Southern Baptist churches have numbered less than 400,000 each of the last five years, and 2005 saw the lowest total since 1993.

With that in mind, LifeWay Research made it a priority to investigate Southern Baptist churches that are effective in reaching people for Christ.

With input from LifeWay Christian Resources President Thom S. Rainer, LifeWay Research determined to look at churches that met the following criteria: baptized at least 26 people per year for 10 consecutive years; had overall worship attendance growth during the same 10 years; and had a membership-to-baptism ratio of no more than 20-to-1.

Out of more than 43,000 churches in the SBC, 22 met the criteria based on data they reported annually. Of these, 19 agreed to have several staff members and lay leaders participate in a process of one-on-one interviews.

So what exactly do these 19 standout churches have in common?

Jonesboro First Baptist Church

Light Breakfast 8:30 A.M.
Conference 9:00 A.M.—Noon

Phil Miglioratti,
IBSA Prayer Coordinator will be the guest speaker.

All Christians pray but few are satisfied with their prayer-quotient; the combination of understanding the biblical process of prayer and the daily/weekly experience of actual praying. All churches pray but not all churches are praying churches. So, whether you are a leader or a servant, this workshop is designed to enrich your prayer life and equip you/your ministry to pray upward and outward so the Church begins to move forward.

Prayer: Standing, Kneeling, Reaching . . .

PRAYER POSITIONS
===>Click headline to read the interview with Pastor Kevin Kerr . . .

(Tom Adams wrote an article in the Illinois Baptist in response to a reader’s question about the position of the body in prayer. He may have briefly listed the positions, but opted to leave the question with the simple determination that the heart in prayer is of greater importance than the position. He was right, of course, but I wished for more after I read his words. He may have been limited in his ability to elaborate by the amount of newspaper space allowed him and was forced to cut his comments short. However, his column caused me to reflect upon the original question a little deeper.)

The Bible records that persons demonstrated various positions of the body during their times of prayer. A serious consideration reveals that it is not the position of the body that matters most, but the attitude of the heart. The heart is always the most crucial in our dealings with the Lord. However, a deeper study of Biblical prayer reveals that the position may indeed matter at certain times. Prayer “body language” says a lot about the condition of our heart and our motivation in praying. The Bible lists at least seven positions of prayer. Each of these reveals substantially the attitude of the one who is praying===>Click here to access chart . . .

IBSA @ Prayer ~ Standing, Kneeling, Reaching ...

IBSA Prayer interviewed Pastor Kevin Kerr of First Baptist Church of Machesney Park . . .

IBSA Prayer ~ Pastor Kerr, you recently called your congregation together for a very special prayer experience ...

I was overwhelmed by the evidence of scripture and I wanted to share it in a prayer experience with my church family. We designated a Sunday evening for an extended time of prayer.

IBSA Prayer ~ What led you to design such a prayer service?

I was intrigued by an article that I read in the Illinois Baptist. Tom Adams had been asked whether the position of the body meant anything during prayer. I turned deeper into the scriptures and discovered that indeed the position of the body did reflect the character of the heart. Out of this scriptural study, the prayer service was born. I developed an explanatory chart to help each person grasp the understanding and significance of what I was trying to do.

IBSA Prayer ~ This was a new experience for many of your members. How did they respond?

My church is used to my unusual requests, so they responded well. They were tentative at first, but quickly were captured by the reality of the truth that body positions can reflect the heart. Many commented that the service was deeply meaningful to them. They even did their best to participate in the prayer in the prostrate position.

IBSA Prayer ~ How are these various positions beneficial in praying?

Moving our bodies into the various positions helped us get beyond the artificial attitude that many times accompanies prayer. We were humbled and the “new” positions helped focus our prayer. We discussed what each position might reflect and then sought to pray in that particular attitude of the heart.===>Click headline to access article on positional praying . . .

IBSA Prayer ~ Pastor, some good Christians might be concerned that this type of expression is too close to what some call "charismania"...

We found our support and encouragement in the Bible. We did not do anything that was of man or glorified man. We simply placed our bodies in particular, scripture-directed positions and then prayed from our hearts. I see no need for fear or apprehension. The idea of charismania never entered the picture or crossed our minds.

IBSA Prayer ~ What wisdom would you give to pastors and prayer leaders who want to lead their members into a deeper, more expressive prayer life?

I have found that persons will not come to the normal Wednesday night prayer service. So, I have brought prayer to them in the other times that we are gathered together. By teaching about prayer and studying the scriptures together, I have found the people very open to putting into practice right away the truths they have learned. I believe if prayer is vital to the pastor and he seeks to be relevant and alive that prayer can become vibrant again in the church. I have gotten beyond the fear of making people uncomfortable by asking them to pray. I seek to eliminate as many of the “offensive” things (like asking certain persons to pray aloud) and suggesting creative ways in which the whole congregation can pray. I do not consider myself a great pray-er. I am disappointed that my prayers are not stronger, filled with more faith, and more reflective of a deep abiding with Christ. I am simply trying to learn to pray.

IBSA Prayer ~ Pastor, please write a prayer for all IBSA congregations, that we'd be open to a fresh encounter with God everytime we gather for prayer...

Dear Lord, I am in agony over the desperate state of prayer in the lives of your people. What is meant to be an encounter with you as our holy God has become a shallow expression of duty before people. The avenue through which you reveal yourself deeply to those that love you has become a channel for pleading for comfort, possessions, and an easy life. We have substituted words and performance for brokenness and faith. We have replaced purity and humility with flippancy and arrogance. We do not prepare our hearts for prayer nor for listening to your voice. We have taken far too lightly the wondrous gift that is ours in the blessing of prayer, communing with you our God. Help us to repent. Help us to change our hearts for prayer and our attitudes toward prayer. May we pray as if we believed our very life, even our very breath, depended on our connection with you. May we go into prayer by faith, in awe, with joy. Please bring revival through prayer and may it begin among us, your people in Illinois. Let it be so.

IBSA @ Prayer ~ Interview with Pastor of Mission of Faith

IBSA interviewed Pastor Michael Randle of Mission of Faith Baptist Church

Mission of Faith Baptist Church - 11321 S Prairie Ave, Chicago, 60628 - (773) 821-5552

*Pastor, you have recently completed an extended emphasis on prayer - What prompted you to call the men and women of your church to extraordinary prayer?

During a meeting with our leaders I felt the need to ask the people of God to help me seek His heart for our church. I asked them to only ask Him to open our hearts to that which is in His heart.

*What was your intention in preparing a journal for women and a different journal for men?

I believe in Biblical Complimentarianism. Thus, I felt it would be essential to help both men and women of our church see how God created us, and to understand His purpose for creating us male and female. The journals helped the women to look at what the word of God says about womanhood and urged the men to look at what the word says about manhood.===>Click headline to view journals . . .

*How did your members respond? Did their response surprise you at all?
The response in itself was a surprise. The people of Mission of Faith are some of God's best. They are spiritually tuned in to my leadership and the Spirit of God moving in our church. Therefore, they respond pretty well when called upon. The greatest point of surprise was during the prayer event where some of the members shared their personal experiences. Through their testimonies I found a stronger sense of God's presence in the entire project.

*At the end of the prayer emphasis, you designed a special evening of prayer. What was your hope for that service and, as you evaluate the prayer emphasis, what evidence did you see (or hear!) of your people progressing in prayer?

The prayer emphasis was the stamp of approval on the entire project. Several new ideas where birthed from that night. I received many phone calls from men and women telling me how much they appreciated the whole thing. Most called to tell me that we must not stop. The biggest thing I felt we achieved was to help the people of God get closer to Him-this of course is the most important of them all. I see and am sure that many of the persons involved are learning that God does hear their prayers.

*Now what, Pastor?

One of the things that we will do from this day forth is to start our "One Voice, One Prayer, One Purpose" project. This project will involve the entire church being involved in prayer as one voice. We will also look at creating a prayer blog in the future to fit our website, and we will do more of "Project 24" which is when we will be involved in a 24-hour period of prayer concerning church related and other needs.

*Pastor Randle, please write a prayer, asking the Lord t prompt many more IBSA pastors to call their church into prayer...

Dear Father, I come on behalf of the many pastors and churches who are a part of IBSA. Lord I ask that you ignite a passion for prayer in each pastor and church. I ask that you let it burn like the heat of the desert sun.
Lord move on each church and every member of these churches; put in them a fervent and insatiable desire to be in your presence everyday. Help us all to become what Daniel was. Help us all to do what our Lord told us to do; "Pray always." Lead us to keep in mind that the great church planter, Paul, exhorts us to "Pray without ceasing." Father help us to do it so that you might be glorified as we pray. This I ask in Jesus' name, amen.

Interview with Leader of Biltmore Baptist Church's Dynamic Prayer Ministry

IBSA Prayer interviewed Carolyn Fuqua,
Prayer Ministry Coordinator @
Biltmore Baptist Church

Prayer Leader ~ Carolyn, how long have you been Prayer Ministry Coordinator and what was the status of prayer when you stepped into that position?

For several years I had worked with the Pastor as a volunteer with the Prayer Ministry then came on staff January 2001. The Prayer Ministry, at that time it was the God's 600, was strong when I came on staff. This was due to the fact that our Pastor had given great leadership to it, and people were excited to pray and watch God great things in our midst. We had watched as Biltmore moved from the depths of despair to getting a glimpse of glory as God worked and moved among our people.

Our continuing goal is to recruit people to pray in small groups, as prayer partners over the telephone, or at home, using a Quarterly Prayer Guide. The Prayer Guide keeps us all focused on the same prayer prompts – the church objectives, ministries, missionaries and staff of the church. The Prayer Guide is published on a quarterly basis and calls attention to the goals and objectives we believe God gave us when our Pastor came in 1993. Biltmore continues to grow under these five objectives: Praying, Reaching, Equipping, Giving and Celebration Worship. We try to be creative in keeping these objectives out in front of our people at all times. And nothing happens at Biltmore unless it comes under one of these objectives. We cannot do everything but we can do what God calls us to with excellence.===>Click here to view the Prayer Guide

Prayer Leader ~ What milestones have been achieved since then? And, what sacrifice was called for to take these steps forward?

We now see a climate of prayer throughout the church leadership and body praying in one accord for God's agenda for BBC. More has been gained than ever sacrificed but an effective Prayer Ministry has many challenges that we must always be aware of. I believe Elaine Helms (Denominational Prayer Leader for the Southern Baptist Convention) said in one of her conferences, “It is easier to get people to sign up than to show up!” How true. A Prayer Coordinator has to lead with tenacity! It has to be a passion.

For me personally, even though I was not aware of it for years, prayer has been a constancy since my teenage years. We will all admit that prayer works, but how persistent and consistent are we to pray? Our culture is diametrically opposed to a consistent prayer life. By that I mean we are living in a culture of “instant results.” We take a pill to lose weight “instantly” without the discipline of proper eating habits and exercise. We want and crave the “easy” way. An effective Prayer Ministry requires hard work and perseverance. It’s not about me or us! It’s about what God wants to do and us agreeing to His timetable. If you become tired, pray! If you become discouraged, pray! If no one is responding, pray! If no one is listening, pray! Because God is always listening and teaching us as we totally depend on Him for the results.

Prayer Leader ~ How important is the statement of purpose to the direction of the prayer ministry?

"Every member praying, seeking His power, protection and provision, pursuing personal holiness, and following His leadership for Biltmore Baptist Church." Very important. Prayer is not a spiritual gift but a privilege every child has with his Father.

Prayer Leader ~ God's 600 is now God's 1300 ... Please describe this ministry and how it is strategic to the overall ministry of the church.

The God's 1300 Prayer Ministry is a proactive ministry designed to cover the church body, ministries, missionaries and staff in prayer on a regular and consistent basis. People are encouraged to pray in small groups, over the telephone with a prayer partner, as a Point Person praying at home, and in Power Point during the worship services on Sunday morning. A prayer guide is provided to encourage focused prayer in one accord. Everyone praying together for the same purpose cultivates unity and harmony in the body of Christ.

Prayer Leader ~ How vital is prayer among the church's small groups?

The small group encourages accountability among the members, and is also a teaching tool. We learn to pray by praying together. Often prayer leaders come out of prayer groups. However I spend time with every person who wants to start a prayer group. We have a Job Description as we ask our prayer leaders to keep their group on task and focused. It is the prayer leaders’ responsibility to assure the group prays on a regular and consistent basis.

Most of the time I can tell the depth of prayer going on by the actions and attitude of the prayer leader. We are always looking at creative ways to stay in touch with our prayer leaders and encourage them. We have quarterly prayer gatherings and use these as opportunities to encourage and strengthen the leaders. As often as possible our Pastor speaks to them and challenges them.

Prayer Leader ~ Please comment...

>Every church prays but not every church is a praying church...
Our goal is to have every ministry of the church saturated in prayer. As the entire leadership is involved in the Prayer Ministry, prayer saturates the church. The pastor of evangelism is praying for the pastor of worship; the pastor of youth is praying for the pastor of singles, and on and on it goes. Everyone praying for God's agenda for the church.

>A praying church needs a praying pastor ...
The Pastor is God's anointed for leadership of his flock. A praying pastor not only preaches and teaches about prayer but models it before his congregation. The church body recognizes the importance of prayer because it is lived out in the Pastor's life and ministry – it is a priority in his life. Through the years there has been much study and teaching on prayer but not much praying. Effective prayer is praying!
Traditionally we had sporadic prayer meetings if we were going to have a revival or if there was a crisis. Most of the time prayer was included in a service format in the same manner as an announcement or song. And much of the prayer that did take place was through the women’s organizations. When a Pastor and/or pastors give leadership, I believe men will follow. It’s exciting to see as many men praying as women!

>Prayer Coordinator's ought to promote prayer for the pastor ...
One of the main strategies of the enemy is to take the pastor down or out! If he can't take him down, he will discourage him at every opportunity. Spiritual warfare is prevalent and the enemy knows where to aim. I believe it is the Prayer Coordinator's responsibility to assure the Pastor and staff are covered and protected with prayer.

>Prayer during the worship service ...
Prayer during the worship service is acknowledging God's presence and power and seeking His protection and provision. Praying for changed hearts and lives and praying for God's anointing power on the Pastor, worship leaders, choir and congregation.

Prayer Leader ~ Share insights about planning on how to:

>Seek Christ's agenda for the ministry of prayer ...
There are many models of prayer used in prayer ministries. As the Pastor gives leadership to prayer prompts for the church, people may be encouraged to pray corporately or in small groups for God's agenda and leadership. Learning together to pray through the eyes of Jesus and His Kingdom purposes is a discipline. Much of our prayer lives have been spent in praying for the needs of people. In John 17 Jesus prayed for his followers and all who would come after them – this is what we call the church, the body of Christ. If Jesus prayed for the church, can we do less? Our mission is to be salt and light to a dying world and one of the best ways to be that is to pray.
Our leadership seeks God's agenda for their ministry with prayer at staff meetings, prayer at retreats, and prayer for the staff and leadership through our God’s 1300 Prayer Ministry. With prayer groups praying all during the week, people are praying for our Pastor and leadership every day. Sometimes we have used a 24 hour prayer time and invite prayer groups to come for one hour and pray through a need or situation.

>Set goals for the year ...
Goals are important. However, recruitment for the prayer ministry is one by one. Inviting, recruiting people to join you in prayer; growing prayer groups; providing prayer opportunities and events. Always keeping prayer as a main focus.

>Integrate prayer among the other ministries of the church ...
As mentioned before, when the leadership of the church is involved in the Prayer Ministry all ministries are covered in prayer. And prayer is given a priority in the ministry. Every ministry is based and founded on prayer.

>Serve the pastor and his vision ...
God gives the Pastor the vision and then holds him accountable. Our responsibility as the body is to encourage and support the Pastor through prayer. How awesome it is to see God work and do great things with ordinary people.

Prayer Leader ~ One last question ... What encouragement can you give to an equally passionate prayer coordinator who is serving in a small, under-resourced, maybe even under-interested, congregation?

Prayer begins with one person. Begin praying first of all for your Pastor and his family. Pray for unity and harmony in the church body. Recruit 2-3 people to pray with you on a regular basis. Then determine the goals and objectives of the church and begin praying in that direction. Seek God's will on ministry areas and the people He wants you to reach. Focus on Kingdom prayer – the salvation of lost family members, etc. One question that is helpful is: if Jesus were standing in this place, what would He be praying for?

Prayer Leader ~ Carolyn, please write a prayer for your prayer leader colleagues...
Father, we give You praise for Your majesty and Your grace. You are compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, abounding in love. Forgive us for the times we have been disobedient and have disappointed you; thank You for Your forgiveness. By Your amazing power we ask that You strengthen the hearts and minds of your children as we seek to serve You. Encourage our hearts Father that we may experience You in all Your fullness and serve You better. May we acknowledge You in everything we do – all to Your glory alone. Help us to rest in the sufficiency of Your strength, understanding that through You everything can be accomplished. Help us not to become weary or discouraged in well doing, and the busyness of our responsibilities, but to always depend and rely on Your faithfulness. We pray that in 2007 we may all pursue personal holiness and have a hunger and thirst for righteousness as we seek Your face. And now we thank You Father for what You are going to accomplish in the days ahead. Help all who come behind us to find us faithful and may You be glorified in our lives. All to the glory of Jesus we pray, Amen.

21,000 Students in Atlanta for Passion 07

Passion 07 kicks off with 21,000 students in Atlanta
By Brandon Bryant

ATLANTA (BP)--Passion 07 is underway in Atlanta with more than 21,000 registered college students from across the United States and at least 30 countries. They arrived on New Year’s Day for the four-day conference that ends Jan. 4.

Attendance has increased from 18,000 last year and 11,000 in 2005. To accommodate the crowd, Passion 07 is being held simultaneously at Philips Arena and the Georgia World Congress Center, the venues linked via satellite.

The purpose of the Passion gathering is still centered on Isaiah 26:8, which says, “Yes Lord, walking in the way of your truth, we wait eagerly for you, for your name and your renown are the desire of our souls.” The idea behind Passion 07 is to motivate students to live for God.

“Making our lives count for what matters most is a worthy goal but a costly proposition, one that must be thoroughly absorbed and embraced if our lives are going to be shaped for His renown,” Louie Giglio, founder of the Passion movement, said.

Along with Giglio, other speakers at this year’s conference include John Piper, Beth Moore and Francis Chan.

Passion 07 consists of main sessions including worship and a speaker. The conference also provides a time for community groups where students get together to talk about what God is doing in their lives. At other times, students can join in on breakout sessions where they can hear speakers in smaller, more intimate gatherings. Finally, there is a time for students to relax at “Late Nites,” where they hear from artists such as Shane and Shane, Aaron Shust and Steve Fee.

Giglio spoke in the first main session on Monday night about the tremendous effect Passion could have on college campuses.

“If God truly does come in our midst, then the ripple effects of that are going back to campuses that represent over 10 million of the 16 million college students in this nation,” he told the students who represent 1,300 colleges and universities.

Also during his talk, Giglio highlighted the fact that Christ rescues people from sin.

“Passion 07 is all about Jesus Christ,” he said, adding that people currently live either in the kingdom of this world or the Kingdom of God.

God has made a way for people to be rescued from sin through Jesus Christ, Giglio noted, and those who have accepted His plan of salvation “have been transferred out of darkness into the Kingdom of His Son.”

Brandon Bryant is based in Lynchburg, Va. With reporting by Rick Hoganson of Hoganson Media in Nashville, Tenn.

Why Another Prayer Conference?

You are invited to a Prayer Conference!
You may be asking yourself this same question? --Why do I need another prayer conference?
The major common denominator everywhere Christianity marches forward, is that the Christians spend significant time praying together. We have all heard how the churches in Korea & China meet every morning to pray together for at least an hour before going to work, and that they have all night prayer meetings one or two times a week.
Pastor John Franklin in his new book, "And the Place was Shaken" says..."In America, we still practice the ministry of the Word. It is the centerpiece in most worship services. Outstanding radio teachers can be heard anywhere in the country. Our churches have the finest.
However, by in large we have abandoned meaningful prayer meetings. Most that remain are anemic & weak. This begs the question, might there be a connection? Could we be spiritually imploding because we've forsaken what the Apostles guarded as one of their top two priorities?"
He goes on to say, "We must make our ministry of mobilizing our people of God to pray together an equal priority with preaching and teaching the Word of God. I used to think that the reason the early church had such power with God was because they practiced missions and evangelism. I assumed the cause of their power with God in Acts stemmed from their obedience to be on mission with Him. I no longer believe that.
I now believe their practice of missions and evangelism with the effect of their power with God. I am not advocating we do nothing to encourage missions and evangelism, but I am saying the emphasis of leading should fall on shepherding God's people. If the heart's soil is fertilized, the stalk of service quickly sprouts."

And the Place Was Shaken: How to Lead a Powerful Prayer Meeting

Author: John Franklin

Prayer for the church is not a casual practice but communion between Christ and His body that is as intimate as communion between a husband and a wife. And for the church, corporate prayer is not an optional ritual but a commanded expectation. However, having an effective corporate experience of prayer-whether in a large congregational setting or a small group-depends on many factors. John Franklin highlights not only the theology behind powerful corporate prayer times but also the effective habits and practices of a praying church. Know why God especially requires corporate prayer.

WHAT OTHERS ARE SAYING:

"John Franklin has a clear view of the local church & God's call to prayer.
As a pastor, he has an insightful word for today's churches....
a word that needs to be heard & heeded. . .
getting in touch with the God of Heaven, seeking His will for the people and places to which He sends us and joining Him in the work He gives us to do.
"May our Churches be Shaken"!"
Rick Shepherd,
Fl. Baptist Convention

"And the Place was Shaken" is God-focused and brings churches to the Savior, not just a program format. "I cannot imagine a more timely and urgently needed resource. This tool has a wonderful balance of biblical principle and practical application. I wholeheartedly recommend this book to every leader with any responsibility for guiding prayer!"
Gregory Frizzell
Prayer & Spiritual Awakening Specialist
Baptist General Convention of Oklahoma

It has well been said that prayer can do anything that God can do. I am grateful for John Franklin''s wonderful book, And the Place Was Shaken. As a pastor for many years, I have struggled with the subject of leading powerful prayer meetings. This book will be an asset to pastors such as I, and Christian leaders everywhere. I am happy to commend it."
Adrian Rogers, Pastor Emeritus
Bellevue Baptist Church, Cordova, Tennessee

"I know of no one better than this author to speak to the subject of prayer. He not only is capable of writing on this ministry, but he has been very effective in leading our prayer ministry here at Woodstock''s First Baptist Church. You will be challenged and instructed in this excellent book."
Johnny Hunt, Pastor
First Baptist Church, Woodstock, Georgia
