Southern Baptists called to pray for Turkmenistan

Southern Baptists called to pray for Turkmenistan

ASHGABAT, Turkmenistan (BP)--Southern Baptist workers are asking people to pray for the future of Turkmenistan following the sudden death of its president, who ruled the mostly Muslim nation for 21 years.

President Saparmurat Niyazov, 66, died Thursday of heart failure. Christian workers in the region fear riots could break out and basic functions of government could collapse if a new leader is not appointed within the coming days. But one worker hopes this time of uncertainty will usher in new opportunities for the Gospel to spread in a country where religious freedom and Christian work are nearly nonexistent.

“Pray that the people will have hope, and we know that this is impossible without Christ,” the worker said. “While the short term may be difficult, we have such a huge expectation that God is going to do something good that we can’t even comprehend or imagine.”

Make The Lord's Table a Place of Prayer

Claude King writes, "Have you ever gone to the Lord's Table to partake of the elements and left the service unmoved and unchanged? I have. When I partake of the supper in a casual way, I unintentionally say, 'Lord, Your death on the cross wasn't that important.' How grieved God must be when I care so little for the great sacrifice He made for my salvation."

Pastor, I wanted you to be the first to know about the new resource, Come to the Lord's Table. It's a 28-day devotional guide with a small group session each seven days. It also includes a pastor's guide with suggestions for church wide use of the resource in preparation for the Lord's Supper observance. The free download includes Claude's explanation of how he believes this could help your church family fall back in love with Jesus.Learn more and download the complimentary sample...

RESOURCE ~ Websites for Children's Prayer Ministries

Children's prayer movement extends globally

In October, 170 representatives of children's prayer networks from 50 nations gathered in Malaysia for a unique global consultation. It was a time to hear corporately from God and share experiences and strategies in encouraging children to become agents of transformation through prayer for their communities, nations and the world.

There seems to be a true prayer revival among children in many countries in the world. A move of prayer in an Indian children's home came after the girls there were challenged to read and memorise Bible verses, and God showed them the truth and reality of his Word. Children see remarkable answers to prayer, as God 'chooses the weak things of the world to shame the strong' (1 Corinthians 1:27), and He values children's humility, openness, eagerness and faith.

One of the organizers of the consultation said: "We were reminded of how strategic children's prayers can be, and that God uses their praises 'to silence the foe and the avenger' (Psalm 8:2). Children's prayer should not be limited to 'close-to-home' matters - we need to equip young people to pray for global issues such as politics, children at risk, HIV/AIDS and so on. As they take up the authority that God gives them, we will see amazing change. We were encouraged by stories of God raising up children regarded as the 'least' in society, turning their lives around as Christians support them, and using them powerfully in prayer."

Children themselves were an integral part of the consultation, and the organizers stress that children should not be segregated from adults, but be fully recognized as part of the Body of Christ. They want to develop the children's prayer movement hand in hand with the existing prayer movement in all regions of the world. There are many children's prayer websites, and we list a few of them.

RESOURCE ~ Six Sermons on Prayer to Shake-Up Your Church

When the Church Prays

6-Sermon Series on Corporate Prayer

Written by Lloyd Stilley

The following six (6) sermons were preached by Lloyd Stilley as a part of an emphasis on corporate prayer in his church. He was inspired by and drew heavily on John Franklin's new book And the Place Was Shaken: How to Lead a Powerful Prayer Meeting.

The following is an excerpt of the introductory sermon:

My aim this morning is, first, to so persuade you from God’s Word and from church history of the primacy of corporate prayer that you will never view the prayer meetings of our church the same again.

Second, my aim and my prayer is that you will determine to take one step forward in your participation and confidence in prayer, not just as an individual, but with other believers, gathered together with the purpose of seeing God’s glory manifested.

Why am I talking about this today? Is it because our Wednesday prayer meeting attendance is off or our Prayer Ministry involvement is lacking? No, in fact, in both cases, this church has been stronger in attendance and involvement than any I’ve served.

I bring the issue of praying together up for three reasons:

  1. Corporate prayer is on par with preaching and teaching as a priority in a healthy church.
  2. Praying together is a vital key to opening God’s presence and work among His people in unique ways. And
  3. The tendency among believers, even among those who occupy leadership positions in the church, to think of prayer gatherings as the extra-curricular activity in the life of the church.

Here are links to full manuscripts of all six (6) sermons:

  1. The Priority of Praying Together (Acts 6:1-5)

  2. The Critical Mass That Unleashes God’s Will (Revelation 8:1-5)

  3. Why We Believe Better Than We Behave Concerning Prayer (James 4:1-2)

  4. Principles for a Powerful Prayer Meeting, Part 1 (Acts 12:1-11)

  5. Principles for a Powerful Prayer Meeting, Part 2 (Acts 12:1-11)

  6. The Great Awakening (Romans 1:18; Joel 2) (this sermon is preached as a part of the prayer summit service below)

Pastor Lloyd Stilley has been married to Leeanne for 23 years, has two sons, Joey (20) and Craig (16), and has served as a pastor for 20 years. The past 7 years he has served FBC, Gulf Shores. He is a graduate of Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary.

Small Church Prays; Big Impact

Prayers by small church answered in West Africa
By Staff

BARDSTOWN, Ky. (BP)--The praying members of Wickland Baptist Church are proving that small churches can impact the nations. The Bardstown, Ky., congregation, with an average worship attendance of 65, prayerfully chose to adopt the Sokoto Fulani unreached people group of Niger, West Africa. Now they praise God for providing co-laborers to share the love of Jesus Christ among the Sokoto Fulani people.

“It boils down to the hope that every living, breathing Sokoto Fulani … will hear the message of Jesus and know eternal life through Him,” says Pat Stone, the church’s missions director.

Shortly after Wickland members began praying for the Sokoto Fulani, the Lord called 23-year-old Danielle Koepke to live among and love the people as a two-year journeyman missionary.

“Talk about it being real exciting for us and encouraging for our prayers,” says Dave Coffing, a member of Wickland’s missions committee. “That just encouraged us to continue praying.”

Now other churches work with the International Mission Board to help bring the Gospel to this people group, and Wickland hopes to send church members to Niger within the year.

“It’s a little frustrating, not being able to go [right now], but ... you have to wait for God’s timing,” Coffing says.

After praying for lost people groups of the world, Wickland members decided to participate in the IMB’s “PrayerPlus” program, a partnership allowing churches to adopt people groups through prayer. When the congregation received the names of three unreached people groups from which to choose, they immediately began praying for guidance. After more than a month of prayer, the congregation voted to adopt the Sokoto Fulani.

“We’re just a few people doing some fairly dedicated prayer,” Coffing says. “We just try to join in on what God’s doing.”

“This is all a part of the plan God has for the church,” says Ron Hill, the IMB staff’s “personalizer” for West Africa. “It’s not, ‘Should we do this?’ or ‘Does God want us to do this?’ but it’s more a question of, ‘Where does God want us to work, and with whom?’”

After churches have prayerfully determined what part of the world to lift up in prayer, they can contact specific regional personalizers to learn of overseas prayer needs.

Before jumping into people-group adoption, Hill suggests churches ask themselves two basic questions:

1. What people group does God want us to impact?

2. What strategies or ministries does God want us to use to impact this people group?

As Wickland has shown, church size plays no factor.

“A church of any size can have an impact,” Hill says. “They can’t do it all, but they can share their passion with other churches and bring them together in a network to make an impact.

“If we have churches willing to step up and play the role of carrying the Gospel to those who have yet to hear it, we could see the Gospel being carried to all ... people groups in our generation.

“To me, that is awesome.”

Prayer Idea from Kentucky Baptists

Dear Prayer Leaders,

Let me share with you briefly about an exciting prayer initiative that God has encouraged a Louisville, KY pastor to organize. Pastor Ray Hayes is working with city leaders and pastors of several denominations to implement "777 Pray Louisville". Without going in to all the details, here's an overview:

"777 Pray Louisville" is Calling the Religious Community Together for Prayer and Praise- Seeking Transformation of Lives and Ultimately the City!

A Prayer and Praise Rally at the Riverfront on 7/7/2007 at 7:07pm will be preceded by the following:
  • On the 7th day of each month (Jan-June), ministers, key metro leaders, and the planning team will drive around the city on the expressway loop to pray.
  • Beginning 1 week before the rally, ministers, key metro leaders, and the planning team will drive around Louisville everyday on each of all seven days at 7:07 pm, praying for the city and 777 Prayer and Praise Rally.
  • Then at 4:00 pm on July 7th, a convoy of vehicles (777 would be awesome) will circle the city 7 times - praying for a spiritual awakening and transformation.
  • "777 Pray Louisville" window flags will be placed on all vehicles that participate in circling the city with prayer during the months, weeks, and days preceding the 777 Prayer and Praise Rally.

We're not real sure of all that God has planned, but Ray is passionately leading this prayer initiative for our city and is enlisting many others to serve on teams for planning and implementation. Wouldn't it be great if there were similar prayer initiatives or rallies in cities across North America? 777Nashville, or 777 Phoenix, 777 Atlanta, etc. Web sites will be up by December 1st and we encourage others to register their 777 prayer efforts. For more information, contact Ray Hayes at mgbcpastor@insightbb.com or 502-964-0808.

BLESSINGS!
